Weekend Getaway

Lo and Sons

I got bitten by the travel bug a long time ago, and suffer from the effects almost daily. Symptoms: a constant desire to pack my bags and travel to the next unvisited locale. I’m in love with places I’ve never been to and dream of vacations almost hourly. Perhaps I missed my calling as a travel writer from Travel + Leisure. Recently, I’ve been craving even just a weekend getaway. A cabin in the woods somewhere with cozy blankets and hot chocolate. Or a staycation in a downtown Seattle hotel with my husband. A train trip to Vancouver, B.C. or Victoria, B.C.—I could go on and on. But I won’t. Instead let’s talk about the cute bags I would need to get to any of these destinations. I am all about the weekender bag right now. The perfect size for a night or two away, it keeps me from overpacking, which is quite the feat.

There are so many options. From classic to fun and sporty. I love the canvas options from the new line Lo and Sons, but I could just as easily go for a classic Louis Vuitton Speedy. Each has it’s own charms. Here are my top picks for your next mini vacation!

What’s In My Shopping Bag

Sometimes I put off purchasing the things I know I really need to update in my closet or I’ll have been wanting for a long time to buy something because I’ll find something that I know may not be around in a few weeks or months, and I will buy that instead. These past few weeks though, I’ve finally picked up a few of the things I’ve had on my  list for awhile.

The J.Crew “Kiss” t-shirt was just a lucky find. It came out almost a year ago, I think, but it was gone by the time I got to the store to get mine – it sold out fast and I was so bummed. A couple weeks ago, I stopped by the J.Crew Factory store north of Seattle, and there it was. It is so soft and perfectly slouchy – plus, graphic tees are no where near going out of style anytime soon.

Bobbi Brown Beach Shower Gel was just a fun “treat yo-self” purchase I picked up at the Bluemercury store opening in Seattle’s University Village last week. If you haven’t been yet, you have to go! They only carry the best of the best, and the displays are gorgeous – not to mention, tempting. They also have a spa on the premises. I love love love the smell of Bobbi Brown’s Beach scent. It smells like my childhood summers – sunscreen but also a bit floral. I’ve never had the shower gel before, and figured, why not add it to the collection? Clearly, I am CRAVING summer in Seattle.

The tote is one of my favorite recent purchases – it is so me. Stripes and a neon pink heart. I use it as my tote bag for work – filled to bursting with my lunch, notebooks and a good book for my lunch break.

The mirrored Ray Ban Aviators have been on my most coveted list for a long time. They went on sale at Nordstrom last week, and I just couldn’t resist any longer. Another example of my yearning for summer around these parts…plus, the mirrored lenses are just too cool for school. I like the added flash they give to this classic style.

The Kendra Scott earrings have also been a highly coveted item for me for awhile. I have just never been able to pick which color. She has so many bright, fun colors I’ve always had a hard time picking which ones I would get. I regularly would visit the Nordstrom counter and try on at least four different colors and hem and haw over which ones were best. (Note: they ALL were the best). I finally picked the turquoise with the help of my fiance.

Lastly, it was high time for me to replace my white Converse All Stars this month. They are my favorite sneaks of all time, and in white, need to be replaced somewhat regularly since they get dingy. This year, the sales guy at Nordstrom pointed out the new slip on version and I was instantly sold. Just when I thought they couldn’t get more comfortable…

Needless to say, I’ve given my credit card a workout at Nordstrom in the past couple months. And my closet is delighted with it. As am I.

What have you picked up on your recently shopping travels? Inquiring minds want to know!

Slip On Sneakers

I am totally obsessed with the new spring trend of slip on sneakers. As much as I love fashion and style, I love to be comfortable just as much. When the two worlds collide, I’m a happy camper. I don’t know why I didn’t think of this idea sooner, really. My fiance is the world’s BIGGEST Van’s fan. Literally, he doesn’t own any shoes that aren’t Vans—except flip flops and one pair of dress shoes. Vans are like the original slip on sneaker — I should have taken a cue from his closet earlier and stolen the look. The fact that I am now interested in having a few pairs of slip on Vans sneakers, is probably his proudest moment.

They are such perfect weekend casual shoes. I pair my leopard print ones with skinny distressed jeans or cropped black skinny jeans usually. Last week for a party, I paired them with a blush silk button down from Everlane, and my torn up J Brand skinnies and a statement necklace – if I do say so myself, it was a perfect dressed-up and dressed-down look.

Check out a few of my favorite pairs — I think I may need to add the gold Vans to my closet soon. Or maybe the dark denim ones. Or maybe ALL OF THEM.

My New Emily Ley Simplified Planner

All images via Emily Ley

Happy New Year, lovelies! I am so excited for 2014 – I’m getting married to the man of my dreams this year, and I cannot wait. With every new year, I get to shop for one of my favorite things – a new planner. Yes, I know I could keep all my meetings, dates and other important info on my iPhone, but I am old-school. I like a paper calendar that I can flip the pages in and write in with a real pen – somehow, having something tangible that I can hold, feels more organized to me. We’re a dying breed those of us that love the paper calendars. This year, I found my new favorite yearly planner OF ALL TIME. Before this Emily Ley planner came along, I was a Moleskine calendar devotee, but Emily Ley just blew all of that out of the water with her colorful, cheerful, oh-so-pretty, beautifully organized calendar.

It’s big, and spiral bound, and there is room for To-Do Lists and notes, a pocket in the front for stray papers, verses and inspirational quotes on most pages, even a spot for meal planning – something I am determined to get better about this year. And there are tabs – non flimsy, bright ones that make flipping to future months super easy. Truth be told, I also ordered her wedding planner. I couldn’t help myself – her planners are just too pretty.

I am in love with just everything about them. You should get one if you’re one of those non-digital calendar keepers, too.

So, how many of you keep written paper calendars these days?

Calypso St. Barth in Seattle

All images via M. Magee Photography

Calypso St. Barth came to Seattle this past month and I for one, could not have been more excited. I’ve loved the ultra-luxe brand for awhile now, so this was big news for me. I was so honored to be asked by them to host a special event at the new store for their Calypso Cares project benefitting Covenant House last weekend. All my friends and family and plenty of fashionable ladies stopped by to shop for super soft cashmere, cozy winter ensembles, glittering sequins, and deals on sweaters if they brought in a gently used one of their own for the teens of Covenant House. And you guys — if you haven’t been to the store yet, get thee to University Village stat. This store is gorgeous. Oh, and we had cookies and hot cocoa.

Everything is so beautifully merchandised at Calypso — makes shopping even easier (like it’s ever difficult). They even have a little home section with agate coasters I am seriously coveting, pillows with amazing textures, and little gifts.

I was all about the rabbit fur vest and went home with the cozy knit beanie with the pom on the top. Friends of mine went home with sweaters and even an incredible fur neck warmer that we decided could also be used as a turban – a furban if you will. Everyone had a blast trying on something – including the glam gold sequined evening gown. That was on the top of every wish list. As was a place to wear it to.

Thanks for having me Calypso St. Barth! It was so fun helping so many lovely ladies pick out winter fashions and lending a helping hand to Covenant House.

Midi Rings

Have you guys noticed the recent midi ring trend? I’ve been seeing it everywhere recently and it’s such a pretty way to dress up your digits beyond nail art and cocktail rings. I love dainty jewelry, so it’s high on my list of trends to try. Except that I am one, afraid it won’t stay on—don’t they look like they could just slide right off?—and two, I think my fingers may not be long, graceful, and elegant enough. They tend more toward the sausage side of things. Regardless, I am going to slip one on to see how it looks next time I run across one.

Insta-Weekend in Pictures

My weekend was delightful. A Donavon Frankereiter concert with my guy and his brother, taking in the cherry blossoms blooming on the University of Washington campus, shopping for new shoes with my mom and older brother (my first pair of Chanel shoes!), a Saturday night girls’ night in with one of my besties, chocolate, champagne, magazines, and an at home facial from Jessica Alba’s new book, and Easter with the family and a cocktail competition. Deeeeelightful.

P.S. — the facial made my skin feel super soft and it glowed for the next few days. The best part? All the ingredients were in the kitchen! Try it out :)

1/2 cup full fat Greek yogurt

1 tbs ground coffee

A dash lemon juice

Let it dry before rinsing it off with a warm washcloth.

Kate Spade Saturday

The Kate Spade Saturday collection came out recently, and it’s all bright colors, bold patterns, graphic prints, and full of fun, carefree spirit—much like Kate Spade, but with a more casual, laid-back, weekend vibe. Unless you live in Japan, it’s only available online, but knowing the quality of Kate Spade, that doesn’t bother me. Plus, there are so many cute options—these are just a few of my favorites. Especially: the calendar that focuses on weekends. It’s a beautiful thing!

I love you, Kate. You’ve done it again!

3 Things I’m Reading, Listening To, and Coveting…

Three books I am reading right now. Yes, three. I have three teetering stacks of books on my nightstand right now and I am reading all of them. I get so excited that I can’t just wait and have to read a couple at a time. One I will read on my lunch break, one before bed…you get the idea. Currently, I am reading a book of short stories on love, Other People We Married, a book on a family on the weekend of the eldest daughter’s wedding, Seating Arrangements, and like every other fashion lover and blogger out there right now, I’m reading Grace: A Memoir. I just adore her. After she stole the show in the September Issue a couple years ago and didn’t take any sass from Anna Wintour, I’ve been head over heels for her.

Three albums I am playing on repeat right now. The 20/20 Experience from Justin Timberlake—DUH. I’ve loved him since he was an N’Sync-er and I was a teeny bopper, and nothing has changed. My favorite song on the album is Mirrors—even though I am pretty sure he wrote it for Jessica Biel and that makes me jealous. When I’m working or trying to relax and reboot, I play the Malady of Elegance by Goldmund. Its so beautiful and soothing. The piano soundscapes are so moving to me—on In A Notebook, especially.. Finally, when I need something poppy and upbeat to sing along to, it’s In Our Heads by Hot Chip. Always Been Your Love is my favorite track off this album.

Three things I am currently coveting. First, a brightly colored spring and summer dress from Shoshanna. Too bad it isn’t ever warm enough on Easter in Seattle to wear a dress like this. Doesn’t it kind of look like Easter egg colors? Second, I am dying for one of the beautiful duffel bags from Clare Vivier—monogrammed, of course. I never pass up the chance to monogram something. Third, a pretty pen from Lanvin—totally ridiculous and unnecessary, but I am a sucker for a lovely writing instrument sitting on my desk just looking pretty.

What are you reading right now? What are you listening to? I would love to hear your suggestions!
