The Style Umbrella – Inspiration for Stylish Living logo

Chanel Summer 2012 Makeup Collection

I am a huge fan of Lisa Eldridge and her makeup tutorials and videos. She is a master at applying makeup and transforming her look, and I am trying to learn from her techniques. Recently, she did a video using the Chanel Summer 2012 Makeup collection to do her look for the day. I not only love the look, which is neutral but sexy for the face, and bright and colorful for the lips and nails, but I love that she is giving exact tips on how to apply the new products. Chanel makeup is by far my most favorite line – its just so luxurious and well-made. Plus, I love the ever changing additions to the line. Check out Lisa’s look – I think I’ll try it this weekend!

Stylish Couples – Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson

Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger

I ran across a few pictures of Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson on Pinterest the other day, and they looked so insanely stylish together, I went looking for more – just to see if they were always this insanely fashionable together. They are! Joining the ranks of Posh and Becks, Jay-Z and Beyonce, Tom and Gisele, and Brangelina, they are an utterly adorable under-the-radar couple. I mean, come on you guys – its Pacey!! I knew what a catch this one was back in the Dawson Creek days.

Check them out on the red carpet – always perfectly coordinated and complementary. She takes risks with her fashion and I love that about her. She owns it, which allows her to pull of looks that would look otherwise over the top. And I love his suits – tailored to perfection. He even manages to make them look good with sneakers. How adorable does he look in a bow-tie??

Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger Red Carpet

Even when they are laid-back and casual, they look like they consulted each other on their outfits before leaving the house. And not in a “we’re wearing matching t-shirts” kind of way, but in a we’re -just-that-in-sync and we-have-incredible-fashion-sense kind of way. How they manage to be that cute together and not in a sickening way, is beyond me. I just have one question…what is with the picnic basket for a purse, Diane?

I’m feeling inspired to start working on the boyfriend’s outfits and mine too, of course.

What do you think about Josh and Diane’s style?

Pretty Things: Cheeky Accessories from Anya Hindmarch

Anya Hindmarch LondonI am a huge Anya Hindmarch fan – from her glamorous glittery clutches to her Labelled collection that is so perfect for traveling, it’s all so fun and chic. Her Bespoke Collection is my current obsession. I tend to have a horribly sentimental side to me, and these fun little accessories play right into it. I love that you can take one of her products, add your own witty (or mushy) comment (in your own handwriting, no less!) and give it as a gift to those near and dear to your heart. With her cheeky little sayings on accessories, she actually reminds me of my other accessory obsession recently – Kate Spade. They both have such cheery charming details to their accessories.

These key rings are definitely my new favorite things. I am always on the lookout for a stylish key ring – I feel like they are very hard to find and yes, I like even my jumble of keys to look pretty. These ones that say PENTHOUSE and BOUDOIR are utterly adorable. The card cases are one of those sentimental ideas that make me ooh and ahh (and make my boyfriend roll his eyes), but how cute would it be if your man got a new job and you gave him a new card case with a “congrats on your new job” message on it!? Keepsake for a lifetime. The key pouches are just fun – whatever you spend (or want to spend) your money on, you can create a witty comment for. Mother’s Gin Fund? Hysterical. And I predict, for me, someday it will be all too true…

What would your little personalized coin and key purse say?

Wavy Messy Hairstyles

Beachy Messy Waves, Hairstyles

Summer time and the livin’ is easy. Well, okay, I have to go to my day job every day and still get things done, so maybe not easy, but my hairstyles will be! Summer time calls for fun, fuss-free, laid-back locks. One of my favorite hairstyles during the warm summer months is a messy, wavy, beachy, just-rolled-out-of-bed or came-in-from-the-beach look. Its relatively easy to do and looks great on nearly every one.

You can do it a la the Victoria’s Secret Angels look for a casual day-time look, or even wear this style for a fancy night-out for a sexy bombshell feel.

Beachy Messy Waves, Hairstyles

What you’ll need and how to do it:

Wash your hair with a smoothing, anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner, and towel it dry when you get out of the shower.

Apply a medium-sized dollop of lightweight mousse to your whole head.

Separating your hair into large sections, blow dry each section straight with a round hair brush (this is the hardest part for me – I have no skill with a round brush).

After your hair is completely dry, divide your entire head of hair into many small sections and spray with a firm hold hair spray.

Loosely curl the sections with a large-barreled curling iron.

Loosen the curls by running your fingers through all of your hair.

Other great products for a textured, messy look – dry shampoo and anti-frizz lotion!

Three Cheers For: Lazy Sunday Mornings!

lazy sunday mornings in bed

I am not a morning person. I repeat, NOT a morning person. I could easily sleep twelve hours every night and still not feel like getting up the next morning. I blame my super comfy, cozy bed and snuggly, warm pug. Anyway, when the weekends roll around, one of the things I always try to make time for is at least one morning to sleep in and laze around in bed – reading, watching my favorite shows on Hulu, looking at fashion magazines, etc. It doesn’t happen nearly enough – there is always some where to go and something to do, and on the other hand, I also want to get as much as I can out of my weekends, but sometimes you just have to have a lazy Sunday morning in bed – it does wonders for the soul, I swear.

Lazy Sunday

Pajamas, Slippers, Pillow, Lotion, Eye Mask, Blanket

I like to stay cozy in comfy pajamas and cashmere slippers, and do luxurious things that I never seem to have time for during the week – like moisturizing my hands and doing a careful job on my cuticles – a little home manicure if you will. Oh, and I love to sleep with a mask on – pitch blackness does wonders when you’re trying to trick your body to sleep past its normal weekly-wake-up-and-go-to-work-time of 7 am.

Lazy Sunday

Breakfast Tray, Coffee Mug, Juicer, French Press

Now if I could just get someone to bring me breakfast in bed, I would be all set. I think lazy mornings in bed – whether its a Saturday or a Sunday will always be one of my very most favorite things. A pastry, a stack of magazines, books and newspapers and cozy pajamas are definitely my idea of a good time on a weekend morning.

What is one of your favorite weekend activities?

Pretty Things: Brahmin Bags

Brahmin

When I was reading through some of my favorite blogs today, I stumbled upon a wonderful new discovery. Over on the darling and incredibly chic and fashionable Sterling Style blog, I noticed in her photographs, a spot of neon chevron print. I had to know immediately what it was and where I could get it. Turns out, its part of the new line from Brahmin, a handbag and accessory line I have heard mentioned before, but must admit, I don’t know a whole lot about. Let’s just say, I’ve been missing out and I adore these fun, summery, bright bags and accessories with neon chevron stripes and polka dots. Check it out – they’ve got a zillion options and styles. My favorites are the pink chevron striped laptop bag and the little pouches – I would use them to organize the contents of my purse and store makeup in.

I Heart NYC

The Manhattan Project by Cameron Mitchell

This amazing time-lapse video of New York City is making me wish I was in the Big Apple right this moment and also has me wondering, why don’t I live there, again? It so perfectly captures the hustle, bustle and flow of this energetic city. Plus, I feel like it gives a lovely window into all the different sides to this incredible city.

Pretty Things: iomoi Lacquered Tray

Lacquer Tray Stack, iomoi

As you all know, I have been on a home improvement-kick – trying to update my digs and get a little more stylish and sophisticated with my style since I am now officially in my thirties. I figure it’s high time! These lacquered trays from iomoi are on my list of must-haves for the bedroom and living room. Handmade by a Vietnamese crafstman, you can put a custom text and font on them. The 17 coats of lacquer on them make them super glossy, and there is pretty little line of gold-leaf trim on the upper edges of the tray. Stylish. Glamorous. Chic. Colorful. Useful. The perfect adjectives to describe my decorating style.

I could use one for my bar cart, one for jewelry, one for a cute little vignette of knick-knacks on the coffee table…

What would you use a tray like this for?

My Summer Essentials

summerWe Are Oh So Pretty

Well, I might be getting ahead of myself a tad – considering its more like June-uary here in Seattle this week, but I just have to remind myself that true summer days don’t show up in Seattle until after the 4th of July usually – and any sunny warm days before that, are, well…just an added bonus. In an effort to remind myself that summer really IS coming and to perhaps encourage it to make an early appearance in the Northwest this year, I am gathering up my summer essentials and getting ready for sunshine and heat.

Summer Essentials Fashion and Style

1. First things first – one of my summer staples is the perfect white v-neck t-shirt. Not too tight, not too baggy – just perfectly drapey and a tad bit sheer.

2. Said perfect white v-neck t-shirt will most often be worn with my shoe of the summer – black Haviana flip flops. I love my wedges and heels, but during the summer months, as hard as I try to stay stylish and chic…flip flops and casual wear usually win out. I couldn’t live without black flip flops during the summer.

3. I think everyone has to have the perfect pair of denim cut-offs during the summer too. It’s a go-to for so many occasions. Stylish, all-American and sexy – they complete your summer wardrobe.

4. Hair ties. Because when I am sticky and sweaty and hot during the summer (admit it, we all sweat, people!) the last thing I want is my hair on my neck. These cute ones make my ponytail look a little more chic.

5. Aviator sunglasses. Specifically, my new neon orange ones from Kate Spade. I’m obsessed with this color and these are my go-to pair for the next few months.

6. Wedge espadrilles – for when I simply must take off the flip flops and go to work, or look half-way presentable at an event. Also, they look really great with….

7. White jeans! I think white jeans are so sexy and so summer appropriate. Now, if I could just squeeze back into my pair from a couple summers ago, I would be set…

8. A cute bikini. This one is a given, is it not? For me, that usually means a J. Crew bikini. My first ever string bikini was J.Crew and I’ve been a loyal devotee ever since. I love that you can mix and match them and they have so many different options – plus, the fit is so spot on.

Summer Essentials Beauty Makeup

9. Hot pink nail polish! I change my nail polish every couple of days, to tell the truth, but during the summer, I always come back to neon pink. Its just feels right for bright sunny warm days.

10. Beach perfume from Bobbi Brown. I love the smell of this perfume – its like she truly captured the essence of summer in a bottle for me. It smells subtly like sun tan lotion and that is what gets me. Reminds me of child hood summers and there is nothing better than that now, is there?

11. Cream blush. I just feel like creams, gels and liquids go on my skin so much better during the summer months. They feel more fresh and dewy and are easy to take with you and touch up. This slightly coral one from YSL is divine – it give the perfect poppy hue to your cheeks.

12. Hot pink lip gloss. I always go brighter and more sheer during the summer months – it just feels appropriate, I can’t say why exactly – it just does. I want everything to feel lighter and brighter and less over-powering during the summer.

13. Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray – because I hate blowdrying, straightening and curling my hair when its steamy hot outside. I’d rather wash, spritz and go, leaving perfect beachy waves and just the right amount of messy hair for the day.

14. Maui Babe Browning Lotion – this is the one thing I will admit is probably not the best for me, but I can’t help it. I love it. It deepens and darkens your summer tan and color, and you know everyone feels more beautiful and sexy with a tan. I will use sunscreen too, so not to worry! But yes, I like to lay out in the sun during the summer and I’m not afraid to admit it!

15. Dior Creme de Rose Lip Balm SPF 10 – to keep from getting chapped lips in all the hot weather. And to protect them, of course. I told you I was going to wear sunscreen…

What are YOUR summer essentials? What can you just not live without during the summer months?

Fashion Inspiration: Dazed and Confused

Dazed and Confused

The Chive

Alright, alright, alright. Something recently reminded me of the movie Dazed and Confused, and although I can’t for the life of me remember what it was that got me on this train of thought, I can’t stop thinking about the movie now. And wanting to watch it – in fact, its already on my weekend To Do List. It’s one of my all time favorites – never gets old, a true classic. And maybe its all the 70’s influences in fashion right now, or the staggering amount of wide leg high-waisted jeans that are available in stores at the moment, but I am feeling this look.

I mean, who doesn’t love dark denim with a flared leg and super tall wedges? It makes your legs look impossibly long and lean.

Dazed and Confused

Knotted Button Down – Missi NY, Jeans – MiH, Belt – Mulberry, Shoes – Twelfth St. By Cynthia Vincent

So, I’m going to let you all in on a little secret. I’ve long been a fan of the short shorts and tall knee socks look. I know, not the classiest of looks – but there is just something about it – I’ve always wanted to wear that outfit somewhere. I haven’t found the right event (or the nerve) quite yet, but I am pretty sure its going to be my Halloween costume next fall. Brilliant, no? Can’t wait to tell people to “fry like bacon!”

Dazed and Confused

Whistle Necklace – Asos, Baseball Shirt – TNA, Shorts – TEXTILE Elizabeth and James, Socks – Striped Socks

Do you ever get inspired by your favorite movies to create new looks and outfits?
